If You're Fighting Through the Shadows... Find the Light in the Darkness

There’s a darkness most people will never understand. Some know it. Some first responders and veterans know it really well. We’ve walked through it. You can smell the car accident, hear the crying, and feel the weight of the job long after the call is over. PTSD isn’t just flashbacks—it’s that gnawing feeling in your gut when you can’t shut your brain off, when you snap at your family for no reason, when you start to wonder if you’re even the same guy you were before the job got inside you.
Here’s the truth—PTSD lies to you. It tells you you’re weak. It tells you you’re broken. It tells you there’s no way out. But those are all lies. I’ve seen some of the strongest men and women I know fight their way through that darkness. And I’ve learned that strength isn’t about pretending you’re resilient—it’s about standing back up when the weight of the world damn near knocks you to your knees.
I look for the light in the world around me. You have to be intentional. "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you." (Matthew 7:7) I see it in the glorious splendor of a sunset. I see it in the unparalleled symmetry of a honeycomb. You can find it in the slow, hypnotically powerful way a river moves. I see it in the eyes of a returning soldier who sees his family for the first time in months.
There is light in the darkness. Sometimes it’s just a flicker. Sometimes it’s a brother checking in, sometimes it’s your kid’s laugh, sometimes it a cup of coffee when you really need it. Or sometimes it’s a bible verse you can’t get out of your head, like: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5).
I’m not here to sugarcoat it. Healing from PTSD is messy. It’s a fight. But it’s a fight worth showing up for every damn day. And when you find that light—even if it’s just a spark—you hold onto it like your life depends on it. Because it does. This job takes a piece of you, no doubt. But it doesn’t get to take it all. If you’re fighting through the shadows—hold on. The light is still there. Rise up. Fight back. You’re not alone in this battle.
Stay safe out there
